Light

The scriptures teach us that spiritual light comes from Jesus Christ.

“In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not…

That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.”

John 1:4-5,9

Light is essential for life. Without sunlight, plants wither and die. Additionally, even though us humans don’t photosynthesize (that’s fun to say), sunlight is still an essential “nutrient” for us. Our skin naturally forms vitamin D when exposed to sunlight. It also releases serotonin, a hormone that gives you energy and boosts your mood. On the flip side, too little sunlight can cause depression, brittle bones, a poor immune system, and an overall shorter lifespan.

Light also gives us one of our five senses—sight. I don’t know about you, but seeing is pretty important to me. Our sight helps us navigate the world, recognizing the faces and emotions of our fellow humans, deciphering written words, and enjoying the beauty of nature and art.

When Jesus says He is the “Light of the world”, what does that mean for us on a spiritual level? This suggests to me that Jesus Christ is essential for our spiritual life, or in other words, for our salvation.

“That which is of God is light; and he that receiveth light, and continueth in God, receiveth more light; and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day.”

Doctrine and Covenants 50:24

I know that we can always turn to Jesus Christ for light and guidance in our lives. He is there to uplift and nurture us throughout our journey.

“I will be a light unto them forever, that hear my words.”

2 Nephi 10:14
